This commercial adventure to the Brazilian region might smack of National Geographic, but the author's style is charmingly personal. The photos taken by her husband are magnificent and intimate at the same time. Thanks for taking me along!
JUGUA - A Journey Into Body Art From The is an interesting weaving of knowledge and information and myths and stories on and around the topic of the jaguar fruit and the culture/people who utilize it. It is fascinating and well written by Fabius with a few supporting essays by others and wonderful photos of Giacomini's journey into the . The two who bring us this book are the pioneers of temporary body art in this country and the process of how it all happened is an interesting journey to read about. It is a must read for all who are into the tattoo and body art world.
Not only is this book beautiful - the photos are amazing - it's informative, yet non-academic, easy to read and super interesting. Perfect for anyone interested in body art or art in general. It truly is a "journey into body art from the ".
The personal story about the spunky author, her adventurer husband and their innovative henna tattoo business is beautifully woven with a well-researched history of the people of the ; the various tribes, a short and fascinating history of tattoos and the unveiling of the magical and mysterious Jagua fruit. Part journal, part cultural exploration, part memoir, part photo essay, this book brings it all together in one entertaining, smart and visually striking package. I highly recommend it!
This is a gorgeous book on an arcane subject. Unlike henna, whose use is well known and documented (and the focus of an earlier book by Fabius), the ian jagua fruit is virtually unknown to the wider world, so it demanded a broader treatment. Fabius--with a huge assist from her husband and business partner, Pascal Giacomini--has delivered. It's everything you could want to know about jagua--a journey into the history, anthropology, physiology, ethnology and folklore of jagua, as well as all the how-to's of jagua tattoo. The photos (by Pascal Giacomini and Cristina Mittermeier) are exquisite. Also noteworthy are Giacomini's journal of his trip to the heart of the and his encounter with the Matsés; and two other gripping first-person essays chronicling time spent with peoples.
Critics might complain that Jagua defies genres and dabbles in this and that. It's true, but so what? The author can't resist sharing details of her research in a voice by turns intimate, funny, sensuous and wry--starting with the humorous saga of how she and her husband got into the tattoo business. To this and the personal narratives cited above, Fabius adds ethnographic information on a baker's dozen of ian peoples (in addition to the Matsés) whose traditions include jagua. Then there are the jagua tales (e.g. `'How the Jagua Tree Came to Be..."; "Why the Moon Has Markings on Its Surface"; "The Invention of Sex"). The medicinal uses of jagua. The comparison of henna and jagua. A short history of tattoos. Not to mention how to use jagua. There are even appendixes offering further info about ia, plus other (non-jagua) tales--e.g. the Legend of the Pink Dolphin. Whether you're a member of the tattoo nation, an artist looking for inspiration, or just someone drawn to the obscure, you should find this book informative and charming.
