Introduced and selected by Ralph Russell, an eminent Urdu scholar, this collection presents a representative selection of the works of Ghalib, the most famous and popular of the Urdu poets that the Indian subcontinent has produced. This complete Ghalib anthrology comprises poetry and prose translated from both Persian and Urdu, as well as biographical details.
The Oxford India Ghalib Life Letters and Ghazals Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib Ralph Russell Books
Includes his translated writings in Urdu and Persian and an “autobiography” that uses Ghalib's writings to illustrate his personal history and the events he experienced. The sections on his verse and prose keep these writings in their context, so for example the chapter on the ghazal includes a discussion called "Love in South Asian Society" so that those unfamiliar with the times and geography can understand these love poems in their context. The translations are very readable (others will have to comment on how accurate they are; the authors have other publications that include some of the originals). There is a lot in this book to think about. It's excellent. Here's a little sample of verse:The steed of life runs on. None knows where it will stay its course
The reins have fallen from our hands, the stirrups from our feet

The Oxford India Ghalib Life Letters and Ghazals Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib Ralph Russell Books Reviews
Opens another window onto the cultured and cosmopolitan world of the late Mughal Empire. Ghalib wrote in both Persian and Urdu. He prided himself more so on the former as it was the prestige language of the darbar (court). His poems and verse are little known outside of the Indian sub-continent. This book is an excellent introduction to his life and works. It should go a long ways towards helping remedy this blind-spot in world literature.
